Being a mom to Daniel and Temujin is the greatest gift of my life.
I’ve learned that a mother’s love means celebrating equally two very different journeys, two different kinds of growth. It means cheering with all my heart for Daniel’s small but powerful milestones in therapy, and also celebrating Temujin’s beautiful piano concerts and athletics competitions with the same joy. When we first heard Daniel’s diagnosis of Cornelia de Lange Syndrome, I felt completely lost, like we had stepped into a world we didn’t understand.
My husband and I started searching online, and the CdLS Foundation was one of the first things we found. From that moment, we knew we were not alone. We had found a community that truly understands, supports, and walks this journey with us. Daniel has faced many challenges, including life-threatening hospital stays.
During one of those moments, as Edgar and I took turns caring for him, I remember thinking that I needed to be strong for as long as Daniel lives.
Ever since I started exercising and then running with my husband. Running the Chicago Marathon means so much to me because every mile is a small act of giving back to our beloved CdLS Foundation, which supports families in their most vulnerable moments, just like ours.
Every day, I choose not to be afraid of the uncertainty of life, but instead to treasure every single second I have with my two children, hearing them laugh, looking into their eyes, holding their small hands, and truly living in the moment.
