Dear CdLS Foundation,
I’m a mom to a 2-year-old. We are having issues with naps. I lay him down every single day from 1 pm until 3 pm and he lays in the dark playing. It doesn’t matter if he had hours of therapy or not, he just doesn’t want to nap and isn’t tired. Then he will fall asleep between 5 and 6(even though bedtimes 7ish). But the problem is he will sleep for about 30 minutes. Then he won’t fall asleep till 9 or 10pm and then he’s up again around 3-6am.
He hasn’t napped in over 3 weeks and maybe once a week he actually sleeps for 10-12 hours. But the other 6 days he is doing this crazy not sleeping routine.
Does the Foundation have any ideas and suggestions?
Signed,
No-sleep mom

Sleep issues are super common in kids with neurodevelopmental disabilities, and dramatically impact the quality of life for the entire family. In a situation like this, it is worthwhile to schedule an appointment with your neurologist or developmental pediatrician specifically to discuss sleep. It really can take an entire appointment to discuss the potential behavioral and medical issues that could be factors and come up with a plan as to how to address them. Sorry there’s not a quick and easy answer here!

Best,

Kristin Baranano, M.D., Ph.D., Pediatric Neurology
