Hiatal Hernia Treatment

My child was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia. The doctor is recommending a Nissen Fundoplication. Is this the standard treatment?

A hiatal hernia means that part of the stomach is in the chest. This leads to more severe GERD because the muscle at the top of the stomach can’t work with the pinching off effect of the diaphragm pushing in on the esophagus. The amount of hiatal hernia may alter as we grow–much like the legs and feet don’t always have growth spurts at the same time. However, if there is a large hiatal hernia, the GERD can be very difficult to control medically and a Nissen may be required.
