Extraction vs Root Canal
Question: Generally, wondering if an extraction or root canal is the best option.
Answer: There is undoubtedly a difficult decision to be made. Given the limited number of teeth that are still present for proper mastication, it would be ideal to try to save the tooth via a root canal and crown. However, concerns about cooperation and the potential effects of a less-than-comfortable experience on future office visits must be taken into consideration. I will presume that the doctor will use some form of sedation or general anesthesia to perform the procedures. That would minimize the chances of any undue fear or anxiety that could lead to future appointment concerns. The root canal procedure itself is not inherently painful, but it does require a level of cooperation that allows for the precision necessary to complete the procedure. Postoperative discomfort should be moderate to minimal, nothing that an Advil couldn’t handle.
I would recommend discussing your concerns with the treating dentist and learning more about the approach to care, particularly in terms of gaining cooperation and comfort for your daughter. The dentist certainly desires to offer the very best treatment for your daughter. I am sure he will have a plan to make sure the experience is a positive one.
